The effects of hearing loss extend far beyond hearing itself. Communication can become effortful and tiring, social situations may become harder to navigate, and frustration or embarrassment can gradually alter relationships, confidence and identity. For some people, reduced participation contributes to loneliness and social isolation. Hearing loss is also associated with an increased risk of depression and other forms of psychological distress. These relationships are important, but they should not be reduced to a simple claim that hearing loss directly causes mental illness.

This webinar will examine the psychological and social impact of hearing loss, with particular attention to mental health and social isolation. It will explore how hearing difficulty and communication breakdown may contribute to withdrawal and distress. It will also consider signs that warrant sensitive exploration and practical ways in which allied health professionals can respond. Practical implications for person-centred care, referral and collaboration will be considered throughout.
